Well, this is proving to be an interesting year. As a few of you know I moved to Calgary this summer and well... the winters here are a bit different than that of which I am accustommed. Already this year I have seen temperatures colder than what I have ever experienced in the states. By Halloween we had several inches of snow, which is something that only happened in Kansas once or twice. The air here is much dryer than what I am used to as well, which last night was doing quite the number on these lungs of mine. Pj and I were hurrying from the Saddledome to the LRT and I was coughing and wheezing the whole way. She was looking at me like I was going to faint and trying to make me smile asks: "What, don't you like walking with me" I laughed, told her I loved walking with her, but the cold air was just messing with me for some reason. It usually isn't that bad... last night was odd.
Anyhow, the other day we were driving near City Centre and just as we turned onto a street running East to West she tells me: "When we turn this corner; look straight ahead." WOW!!!! I had not seen a sight so wonderous. The mountains are absolutely breathtaking some mornings. When the sun hits the fresh fallen snow on them. Especially when you can actually see the caps. Another place I like is in NW Calgary and when you are driving along and look into the valley, there are clouds sometimes at the level where we are... so we can actually look straight out of the window and see clouds. It's like being in a plane but still being on the ground!
It got so cold so fast here that the river froze, then the ice broke and there was steam coming from the water into the cold air. It was really cool to see, but it also stood as warning to people not to think the water was frozen solid enough to be out on. I asked Pj if there were alot of accidents because of that situation. She said yes there are, because people go out on the ice thinking it is thick enough to fish on.
The Chinook winds came in a couple days ago which cleared the roads some and at least there seem to be a few less accidents. There was one the other that had the traffic backed up for hours! It amazes me how busy this city is, yet things close pretty early. At least in our end of town. Of course, the NW end of Calgary is bigger than the whole city I used to live in LOL.
Anyhow, I am looking forward to the rest of the winter and taking each new experience with excitement and seeing it through eyes like a child.
